Chris Grayling – Shadow Homophobic Secretary: But Why is Cameron Allowing It?
By Emma. Filed in Uncategorized |I suspect lots of you (all both of my readers) will have already heard this - Chris Grayling defending the rights of bigots to break anti-discrimination laws.
Now obviously I disagree with Grayling.
But in terms of political analysis, the more interesting thing is how far the Cameron team have abandoned Cameronism.
They have gone from apologising over clause 28 to this. Losing the Gay vote they were trying so assidiously to court.
They’ve moved away from the environmental community with their embrace of nuclear power, going from technology of last resort to a promise of one new nuclear power station opening every 18 months.
And their move to traditional Tory tax cuts – which can only lead to greater cuts to public services – lose them the Keynsians. Anyone remember when they were trying to woo Polly Toynbee?!
The question is: Are they moving back to their base because they are confident enough of victory, that they can afford to move away from positions they are naturally uncomfortable with. Or are they so concerned about their right flank as the margins tighten they feel the need to throw a few dog whistles their way?
